The CityMac beginning…
Established in 1982 as the first computer store in Northern Michigan with three locations in Alpena, Gaylord and Traverse City, The Computer Haus specialized in sales, service and support of the following manufactures: Apple, Acer, Epson, Compaq, Hewlett Packard, IBM and Packard Bell. In June of 1987, The Computer Haus was purchased by Full Service Medical Systems, a medical billing company for major hospitals in Detroit, Michigan, owned and operated by Richard Neu, CEO and James Neu, President.
By July of 1988, The Computer Haus recognized the ease of use and stable operating system of the Apple Macintosh computer and chose to sell, service and support specifically, Apple products and accessories. Jim Neu also closed the poorly run and operated locations in Alpena and Gaylord and focused primarily in the Traverse City location which by this time there were at least four competitors in Northern Michigan, but The Computer Haus remained and still remains the only Apple Authorized Sales and Service specialist in the region.
In 1993 The Computer Haus moved to a new location and remained there for 15 years. The business continually overcame industry obstacles, not to mention the mid 90’s Apple crisis “which we don’t like to think about anymore” say’s Jim, and maintained the highest level of sales and Mac repair as an Apple Specialist, and increased sales by an average of 30% every year.
In 2008, after 27 years, The Computer Haus changed its name and is now doing business as City Mac. City Mac moved to a prominent location in Traverse City. The doors to a new 6100 square foot store opened in November 2008. The new location includes more than 3700 square feet of showroom, a 1500 square foot service department including “The Bench” which is similar to the “Genius Bar”, offering on-the-spot troubleshooting and Mac repair and a 900 square foot full service coffee shop serving locally roasted coffee, locally made pastries, bagels, sandwiches and deserts which is now known as CityMug.
Continuing along the newly refined lines of the CityMac business model, a new store was planned for Asheville, North Carolina. After a 18 months of searching, on November 27th, 2009, CityMac opened it’s newest location on Biltmore Avenue near Biltmore Village, the Biltmore Estate, and Mission St. Joseph’s Hospital, in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina.
